Positive Job Market Expected for Indianapolis-Carmel, IN MSA

INDIANAPOLIS, IN: June 9, 2009 - Indianapolis-Carmel area employers expect to hire at a respectable pace during the third quarter of 2009, according to the Manpower Employment Outlook Survey.

From July to September, 13% of the companies interviewed plan to hire more employees, while 7% expect to reduce their payrolls. Another 78% expect to maintain their current staff levels and 2% are not certain of their hiring plans.

“The hiring activity is expected to be stronger than the previous quarter when 14% of companies surveyed planned to increase staff levels and 13% expected to cut payrolls,” said Manpower spokesperson Teresa Hinkle.

For the coming quarter, job prospects appear best in Construction, Wholesale & Retail Trade, Information, Financial Activities, Professional & Business Services and Other Services. Employers in Nondurable Goods Manufacturing and Education & Health Services plan to reduce staffing levels, while hiring in Durable Goods Manufacturing, Transportation & Utilities, Leisure & Hospitality and Government is expected to remain unchanged.

Of the more than 28,000 employers surveyed in the U.S., 15% expect to increase their staff levels during the July – September period, while 13% expect to reduce their payrolls, resulting in a Net Employment Outlook of 2%. Sixty-seven percent expect no change in hiring, and 5% are undecided about their Quarter 3 2009 hiring plans.

The next Manpower Employment Outlook Survey will be released on September 8, 2009 to report hiring expectations for Quarter 4 2009.
