August 13, 2012 — Rainmakers is hosting this year’s A Turning Point Masquerade Celebration, a black-tie benefit for Pathway to Recovery, a local non-profit organization, on Saturday, October 20 from 8:00PM to Midnight. This fundraising event is to assist the homeless Hoosiers struggling with a mental illness and addiction. This celebration will be held at Eventz Plus, 7960 Castleway Drive, Indianapolis 46250.
This event will provided food will be catered by A Cut Above Catering, including hors d’oeuvres buffet, passed appetizers, complimentary Signature drinks, and cash bar. Entertainment will be provided by Bryan Meyers, talented music artist and drummer. Fabulous prizes will be featured in their silent auction.
The mission of Pathway to Recovery is to help homeless men and women with a substance abuse and mental illness to become stable, clean and sober, financially self-sufficient, and begin independent living following placement in safe, affordable, substance-free permanent housing. Pathway began in 1989 with a single building and 3.5 staff members providing 24-hour care to 21 homeless adults. Today, Pathway operates six facilities, providing an entire continuum of care beginning with emergency housing and ending with permanent housing for over 90 participants, including families. Numerous program graduates serving as “peer support specialists” help carry out the organization’s mission. In addition, Pathway serves one of our city’s most vulnerable populations, the homeless mentally ill person struggling with an addiction, a population often deemed hopeless by society. Before Pathway, many of these individuals were recycled through missions, emergency rooms, jails and psychiatric units, at a much greater cost to our community. Last year Pathway housed 129 participants within their six programs. That’s 129 men and women who are living as sober, productive citizens, rather than as residents of the city’s streets or shelters. Because Pathway’s programs were created by completely renovating previously uninhabitable properties, neighborhoods welcome their presence.
“Gregg” was a skilled cabinet-maker until a back injury put him out of work. He became addicted to pain medication, developed clinical depression and started drinking. He ended up on the streets, homeless and hopeless. At Pathway, Gregg got clean and sober and received treatment for his depression. He moved from Pathway’s entry level program to semi-independent living and then to permanent housing, which he paid for from his monthly disability benefits.
His 12-year old son visited regularly in Gregg’s one-bedroom apartment at Pathway-IV. Then the boy’s mother died suddenly. Gregg and his devastated son moved to the last vacant two-bedroom apartment in Pathway-V, where they have lived ever since.
Gregg helps in the office at Pathway to supplement his disability income. When he told his son that the assistant director there had to put her beloved dog to sleep, the boy recalled her habit of comforting others with stuffed animals. He brought her a teddy bear and said, “You gave me one when my mom died, so now I figured you need one, too.”
Tickets are $75.00 each and all proceeds from the Masquerade Celebration will be go to benefit Pathway to Recovery and their cause.
