Gavel is somewhere between a coffee shop and a cocktail bar. They offer curated coffees brewed to exacting standards, creative low-proof cocktails and their reimagined grilled cheese of the week. They have beer on tap, select wine and small plates to share.
Gavel also happens to be the lobby of a brand and marketing strategy firm, MilesHerndon. They love to savor a beverage while connecting with community, so we decided to open our entryway to the neighborhood. Stop by and join in for a new adventure in drinking.

Our Featured Non-Profit:
Founded in 2010, ProAct Indy partners with community leaders and corporate partners to provide Indianapolis-area disadvantaged youth with character education, academic enrichment, and critical service-learning opportunities. Service-learning projects are conducted in a social justice context and enable young people to learn and utilize skills to make positive contributions to their communities. Rather than engaging the typical youth in the typical way, ProAct takes traditional service learning models and turns them upside down. A key tenet to ProAct’s mission is that, while we do “serve” at-risk youth, our youth are not the beneficiaries of our service. Rather, our youth become the givers and creators of service in their schools and neighborhoods and seek to serve with their community rather than to or for their community by focusing on relationships. ProAct sees disadvantaged youths as young men and women who are capable of doing and being more while being more tolerant and empathetic of others. At ProAct, we take proactive steps to help them get there.
Derrin Slack, Founder & CPO
While on a college mission trip to Botswana, Africa, Derrin, experienced the power of giving back to others and wondered how his life would have been different had he been exposed to service at a younger age. This led to the founding of ProAct and what it is today. With a strong background in nonprofit management and research, training, and leadership, Derrin acts as the conduit between the needs of the community, and the individuals, partners, sponsors, and students that engage with ProAct. Under his leadership, the organization has engaged over 25,000 boys and girls, community leaders, and business professionals to value intentional community engagement and appreciate diversity and equity as an integral part of their lives. He has trained all over Indianapolis and in such countries as Ireland, Ethiopia, Mali, Mexico, and the UK; and in many cities in the United States. Derrin can be reached at derrin@proactindy.org
